WORKSHOP ON TAXONOMY OF MARINE ALGAE 
17-21 NOVEMBER 2010

Inauguration of the workshop was held on 17th November, 2010 at about 2.30 pm after lunch at 1 pm and registration at 1.30 pm.  Inaugural address was given by Prof.V.Krishnamurthy, Director, Krishnamurthy Institute of Algology, Chennai. The inaugural session was followed by a lecture on Taxonomy and classification of Chlorophyceae by Prof.V.Krishnamurthy. Evening participants were taken to Thonithurai where they were exposed to Kappaphycus cultivation rafts and participants were allowed to collect algae found attached to the rafts for examination in the lab latter. On 18th morning participants were taken on a field trip to Pudumadam to collect marine algae. The trip started at 6.30 am and returned after making collection at 10.30 am.  Participants examined the algae especially phytoplanktons collected at Pudumadam under the guidance of Dr.V.T.Sridharan (marine diatoms) and Dr.V.Srinivasan (Dinoflagellates). On 19th the day started with a lecture on Taxonomy and classification of Cyanophyceae  by Dr.N.Thajuddin. This was followed by another lecture after tea break on Taxonomy of Bacillariophyceae by Dr.V.T.Sridharan. The lunch on that day was followed by a lecture on Taxonomy of Dinophyceae by Dr.V.Srinivasan. Examination of diatoms and dinoflagellates. The  fourth day of the workshop started at 9.30 am with a lecture on Molecular approach to taxonomy wsith special reference to Cyanophyceae by Dr. N.Thajuddin.  This was followed by a lecture on Taxonomy and classification of Phaeophyceae by Dr.M.Baluswami.  After lunch Prof. M.Umamaheswara Rao delivered a lecture on Taxonomy and classification of Rhodophyceae.  The lecture was followed by extensive practical for identification of brown and red algae collected from Pudumadam.  In addition to this participants were also provided with pre-prepared herbaria for critical examination and identification. This was followed by a lecture on writing a paper on "Taxonomy of Marine Algae" by Prof. V.Krishnamurthy. (Click on the images to enlarge)

The final and concluding day started on 21.ll.2010 at 9 am.  Participants were encouraged to interact with resource persons to get enlightened on  collection, identification and preservation of marine algae including planktons. Valedictory session started at 11 am.  Prof.V.Krishnamurthy presided over the function and develivered presidential address after Dr.K.Eswaran welcomed the chief guest, resource persons and participants. Prof.M.Umamaheswara Rao, Professor of Botany (Retd.) Andhra University, Waltair and Dr.N.Kaliaperumal, Scientist-in-charge (Retd.), CMFRI, Mandapam camp spoke on importance of marine algal taxonomy and appreciated the efforts of KIA and MARS for conducting  workshop successfully.  This was followed by feed back from Participants. Dr.Anantharaman, Annamalai University, Dr.Arun Kumar, Azhagapa College, Karaikudi, Dr. Daniel Kutty, Kerala and a student participant. Dr.Gopakumar, Scientist-in-charge, CMFRI delivered the valedictory address after distributing the certificates for the participants.
